ROCK ISLAND DEPOT

Anadarko's third R.R. Depot, was built by the Rock Island Rail Road. In 1936 this railroad depot was reborn as the Anadarko Philomathic Pioneer Museum. The Museum contains artifacts, photo collections, paintings and collections dated back to the 1800's. On display you can see the Edison phonograph, which still works, and 35 records that go with the player. There is a turn-of-the-century telegraph machine which was used at the depot. A replica of the dispatcher's office is carefully maintained as are the replica of the general store and a pioneer doctor's office - complete with the equipment donated by the medical families of the community. U.S. Post Office & Kiowa Indian Agency
U.S. Post Office "Ca. 1935"
The historic Anadarko Post Office building is listed on the National Historic Register and consists of three stories, a brick parapet with stone coping, cornice, lintels and lug sills. The structure housed the Kiowa Indian Agency until 1947 when it then consolidated with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and in 1966 moved out of the building. The lobby features a massive mural depicting the ceremonial and social life of the Plains American Indians. The work consists of 16 variously sized panels of tempera-on-canvas by Native American artist Stephen Mopope (1900 -1974) who was commissioned for the work by the Treasury Department in 1936. The work was assisted by two "Kiowa Five" members Spencer Asah and James Auchiah. The east side of the building still shows its former name. Located at 120 S. 1st Street, Anadarko, OK .

Anadarko Public Library
Public Library "Ca. 1902"
In the mid 1980's, the library board began, in earnest, to locate another site for the library that would be large enough and would be accessible to all the citizens. In 1987, the city council allowed the board to hire an architect, and apply for a grant to help fund the library. Various locations were considered, and, with the help of the architect, who specialized in renovating historical buildings, the vacant, sixty year old building that had been the Roy Hall Chevrolet Dealership, was chosen. In less than a year $604,016 was raised, exceeding the original goal of $500,000. A venture that seemed almost impossible became a reality with the backing and support of the entire community. Memorials and donations came from individuals, families, and businesses. School children held fund-raisers, and local and area civic clubs donated. The trust sought and was awarded numerous grants from foundations. Hollytex Carpet Mill and its employees donated the Community Room, which was dedicated to long-time employee, Marvin Elrod. The children's section was donated by the Paul Allen Foundation in honor of his mother, Faye Gardner Allen, who as a high school student worked at the library. There were some who doubted an auto garage could be made into a library, but Mr. Beck, working with the Library Board, turned the old building into a beautiful, spacious, inviting place, retaining the feeling of the "old" while adding the functionality of the new. Wide-open spaces, lots of natural lighting, warm colors, and climate control make it a very pleasant place to be. Of particular interest is the children's "reading pit" which was once the grease pit of the garage. On completion of the facility, books were moved the two blocks from the Masonic Temple using the "Book Brigade", hundreds of people forming a hand-to-hand assembly line, into the library doorsand onto the waiting shelves. The Anadarko Community Library was formally opened in September, 1990. Since that time, the library has become fully automated and offers computers for use by adults and children. From the letter to the newspaper announcing the Open House Celebration in 1990, comes this quote….. “We can all take pride, not only in the beauty and spaciousness of the building, but in the fact that community effort made it possible. Hundreds of people contributed in whatever measure they could because they believe in Anadarko and its future. The result is a truly wonderful facility that we believe is unmatched in any other community of our size.”

GEORGE'S DEPARTMENT STORE

George's department Store is Anadarko's and Caddo County's oldest clothing and shoe store. It was
opened in 1948 by George Salamy. For over 65 years, George made a tremendous impression upon the Anadarko community and surrounding area. This included state recognition such as the Governor's Commendation Award and being featured in " Is This A Great State Or What?!
This hometown tradition continues as the store has been passed on to George's children and is now celebrating 70 years in 2018!
When you come into George's, life slows down with old fashion service, but the current fashions you know from today. George's Department Store has name brand clothing and shoes for the entire family, infant to adult, specializing in athletic apparel.
THE IDEAL DECORATING CENTER
The Ideal Decorating Center was established April 1, 1995. The store is located in the middle of historic downtown and one of the largest and original spaces to house retail.
The pledge to "make your house the Ideal home" is still something we strive for today. Not only do we provide flooring choices, carpet, vinyl, ceramic and wood, we also provide design services, window treatments and a large selection of wall décor. Other decorating needs, such as candles, picture frames and clocks are available to complete your look. What ever your style we are able to help.
A large selection of kitchen gadgets and gourmet food offer the opportunity to give a useful gift or treat yourself to a new gadget or try a new recipe. Bridal registry is available and we have a baby gift area. Outdoor gifts and yard ornaments help round out your shopping needs. We have over 5000 square feet of showroom space and have it filled with too many items list. We invite you to stop by anytime, Tuesday thru Friday 10am to 5:30pm. The first Friday in December at 6pm we host an open house / tasting party. That evening, gourmet food is available for sampling and there is a storewide discount on all purchases. For the month of December we are open Monday thru Saturday for your shopping convenience.
Originally it was home to Youngheim"s Clothing, then the building was remodeled to house Hedricks, a fabric store and Allen's Western Wear. The Ideal Decorating Center moved to this location in April 1997. A remodeling project was done in 2007 which opened up the west side, exposing to original Youngheim's tin ceiling. Its a beautiful building and worth a look.
Melton Drug a/k/a The Soda Fountain Eatery
Located in historic downtown Anadarko and known for their friendly atmosphere and homemade desserts, the Soda Fountain Eatery in Anadarko specializes in comfort food. Stop in for a variety of sandwiches, salads or hearty loaded baked potatoes, or try one of the tasty daily specials.
